What a personal loan is — and what it isn’t
A personal loan is a cash loan to a private individual: the loan sum is paid out and repaid in equal monthly instalments over an agreed term. Use is free; proof of use is not required.
Legally, a personal loan can be a consumer loan within the meaning of the KKG. Whether the KKG applies depends on the specific agreement. In particular, loans above CHF 80,000 and other agreements listed in Art. 7 KKG are exempt.
The following are not personal loans: mortgages, leasing agreements, loans to businesses and overdraft loans such as credit card limits. A different statutory maximum interest rate applies to overdraft loans.
The legal framework
The KKG and the Ordinance to the Consumer Credit Act (VKKG) set the framework. Five points are the most important for borrowers:
| Rule | Content |
|---|---|
| Maximum interest rate | Since 1.1.2026, a maximum of 10 % annual percentage rate for KKG cash loans, 12 % for KKG overdraft loans. |
| Assessment of ability to repay | Required by law for KKG agreements. The calculation generally assumes repayment within 36 months. |
| Right of withdrawal | 14 days from receipt of the copy of the agreement for KKG agreements (Art. 16 KKG). |
| Early repayment | Possible at any time for KKG agreements (Art. 17 KKG). |
| Prohibition of over-indebting loans | Granting a loan is prohibited if it leads to over-indebtedness of the consumer. |
The article Maximum interest rate for consumer loans explains in detail how this cap is set and when it is reviewed.
How is the interest rate set?
The annual percentage rate is set individually. It is not a list price, but the result of a risk assessment: whoever is statistically more likely to repay receives a lower rate. This approach is called risk-based pricing.
The assessment takes into account:
- income and employment relationship
- fixed expenses and household situation
- existing loans and commitments
- payment behaviour, including entries at the Central Office for Credit Information (ZEK)
This is why rate figures are always ranges. At eny Credit, the range runs from 4.90 % to 9.90 % annual percentage rate. Which rate applies to you is only stated in the offer after the assessment. How the assessment proceeds is described in the article Credit assessment.
What to watch for when comparing
| Compare … | instead of … | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| the annual percentage rate | the nominal rate | Only the annual percentage rate includes all costs and makes offers comparable. |
| total cost over the term | the monthly instalment | A low instalment over a long term can be more expensive overall. |
| the same term and the same amount | different scenarios | Only identical assumptions produce a valid comparison. |
| terms including add-on products | the base instalment without extras | Instalment protection insurance increases the monthly instalment; it is optional. |
The rate in an advertisement is always the best possible rate. Only the rate in your personal offer is binding. You can calculate both with the loan calculator.
Common misconceptions
| Common belief | Reality |
|---|---|
| “The advertised best rate applies to everyone.” | The rate depends on creditworthiness. “From 4.90 %” means it can also be 9.90 %. |
| “The assessment of ability to repay can be bypassed.” | For KKG agreements it is required by law. eny also assesses every application. |
| “Entries in the debt enforcement register don’t matter.” | Payment behaviour and register data are part of the assessment and can lead to a rejection. |
| “The statutory maximum interest rate is the usual rate charged.” | It is an upper limit, not a normal value. The specific rate depends on creditworthiness. |
| “A longer term is cheaper because the instalment is smaller.” | The instalment falls, the total loan cost rises. |
| “A loan is tied up until the end of the term.” | For KKG agreements, early repayment is possible at any time. |
| “Self-employed persons also get this personal loan.” | eny Credit’s offer is aimed at employed persons resident in Switzerland. |
Who can get a personal loan
- residence in Switzerland
- employment as an employee
- Swiss citizenship or residence permit B or C
Self-employed and freelance persons, people without residence in Switzerland, and loans to businesses are not covered. Every application is assessed individually; meeting the requirements does not amount to a loan commitment.
When a personal loan is not the right solution
A loan shifts a payment into the future and costs interest as a result. It does not solve a structural budget problem. Caution is warranted in these cases:
- The household budget is already tight without a new instalment.
- An existing loan cannot be serviced as agreed.
- The loan is meant to bridge current expenses or other debts.
- There are open debt enforcement proceedings.

Frequently asked questions
How high is the interest on a personal loan?
At eny Credit, the annual percentage rate is between 4.90 % and 9.90 % and is set individually according to creditworthiness. For cash loans, a maximum of 10 % has been legally permissible since 1 January 2026.
What is the statutory maximum interest rate?
Since 1.1.2026 it has been 10 % annual percentage rate for cash loans and 12 % for overdraft loans. It is calculated using the VKKG formula and reviewed at least once a year. Source: Federal Council media release of 31.10.2025.
How does a personal loan differ from a consumer loan?
A personal loan is usually a cash loan for private purposes. It can be subject to the KKG unless a statutory exception applies. "Consumer loan" is the law's broader term.
What is the annual percentage rate?
It states the total cost of a loan as a percentage per year and includes, in addition to interest, the other costs. Only this figure makes offers comparable. The statutory maximum interest rate likewise refers to the annual percentage rate.
How much credit can I get with my income?
This follows from the assessment of your details. For KKG agreements, repayment within 36 months is generally assumed for the assessment of ability to repay, even if the contractual term is longer. There is no blanket rule of thumb.
Can I repay a personal loan early?
With a KKG agreement, yes. Interest and costs for the unused loan term are reduced accordingly.
Do I have to state what I use the loan for?
Proof of use is not required; use is free. The intended purpose is asked about in the application because it can be part of the assessment.
When do I receive a provisional credit decision?
After submitting, you usually receive a provisional credit decision within around 3 minutes. It is not a binding loan commitment; further processing depends on the assessment and the required documents.
